I am not exactly sure why the story made such an impact upon me, perhaps it was the first book for a young reader that portrayed a person's struggle to figure out who he is in and to the world and himself.

Borland reminds me of Hemingway with his clear grasp of clean and crisp language. The settings and characters are unforgettable.

This was a high school reading assignment, but I have always remembered the beauty of its language, characters, and plot.
